Protestants & Sola Scriptura

The doctrine of Sola Scriptura ("scripture only") is the cornerstone of Protestant fundamentalism. Its basic claim is that God's revelation to mankind is limited to the contents of the Bible alone and that a Christian is not obliged to pay attention to any othe authority--e.g., the Church or Tradition. This memorandum, which appeared in Crisis magazine, makes some points that Catholics ought to consider when dealing with this claim by Protestants. Those who wish to learn more about the subject will want to listen to Scott Hahn's superb audio tape course, Bible Alone?, available from St. Joseph's Communications in California (800-526-2151) and read Karl Keating's Catholicisim and Fundamentalism (Ignatius Press).
