Priest extradited from Switzerland
Will face local tribunal

A Rwandan priest was extradited from Switzerland to his native land in September, so that he might face genocide charges before an international war-crimes tribunal.

Father Emmanuel Rukundo, a former Rwandan army chaplain, was arrested in July at the request of UN war-crimes prosecutor Carla del Ponte. He is accused of involvement in the 1994 Rwandan massacres in which an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed.

According to the charges—which he denies—Father Rukundo compiled lists of Tutsis who should be executed, and called for their extermination, while he was working as a military chaplain.
