Canadian missionary killed
Robbery or intimidation?

A Canadian missionary priest was murdered at his church in Jamaica on June 21. Father Martin Royacres, SJ, was found lying face down in his office, still clutching the keys to St. Theresa church in Annotto Bay in eastern Jamaica. He had been shot in the chest.

Police said they suspected robbery was the motive. However, the priest’s Jesuit superiors said he had recently received death threats. Father Joseph Horrigan, SJ, said Father Royacres and another priest had recently received telephone death threats because of their involvement with a proposed aid program that would put unused government land to use for food production. The Canadian Jesuit province could not identify the source of those threats.
