Pro-life sign censored
Message unwelcome during elections

Elections BC, the election commission for the western Canadian province of British Columbia, has ordered Our Lady of Good Counsel Church to cover up a pro-life church sign during the “advance poll”—a kind of election primary, and again on Election Day.

The location has been designated a polling place for the May 16 election. The sign in question depicts an unborn child with Mother Theresa’s caption “God’s gift to the Family.” It also offers contact numbers for various crisis pregnancy help lines. John Hof, president of Campaign Life Coalition BC, was shocked that Elections BC would impose this arbitrary restriction on a church. “Their mandate should only extend to political messages and this seems well beyond their purview. It is almost reminiscent of government thought police,” Hof said. n
