_WORLD WATCH______________________________ Millions without food Up to 1 million people have been displaced from their homes and are without food and water in southern Sudan, according to the bishop of Rumbek, Sudan. Bishop Cesare Mazzolari told the Misna missionary news agency, “A million people are living under the nightmare of extreme hunger and thirst. These people are on the brink of death.” Soldiers of the Islamic government in the north have been fighting mainly Christian rebels in the south for decades, leaving more than a million people dead. Bishop Mazzolari said the most dire situation was in Bahr el-Ghazal in southern central Sudan, where people are already dying of thirst and are faced with cholera and other diseases. “The people are so weak from lack of food that they are facing a famine like that which occurred in 1998,” he said. |
