Bishop wants to meet president
Seeks an end to blacklisting
Archbishop Pius Ncube of Bulawayo has requested a meeting with President Robert Mugabe, who has placed the bishop on a list of “enemies of the state.”
Mugabe has blamed Archbishop Ncube, among others, for the near defeat of his ruling Zanu PF party in recent general elections. “I have to see the president to clarify my position because he has taken me as a campaigner for the Movement for Democratic Change,” Archbishop Ncube told The Standard. “All I have done is to insist that the rights of the people be respected.”
Mugabe has compiled a list of religious and civil movement leaders whom he blames for the African country’s political and economic woes and specifically accused Archbishop Ncube of delivering anti-Zanu PF sermons. “I do not support any political party, but believe that the president should listen to how people feel. I have nothing against his position, but he should respect people’s rights,” the bishop said.
