Electing a New PopeFollowing Jesus and searching popularity never go hand by hand
by Fr Nathan Miller, LC | Source: www.FormationToolbox.com

(Gospel) While the
Cardinals hide themselves away from the world..the Liturgy speaks to us today of the Scribes and
Pharisees who acted out of fear of the people.
Anyone who does not truly believe that the Church was founded by
God and continues to be upheld by the Holy Spirit, will be more than ready to cry out for more
democracy. They will look upon the election of a new Pontiff as simply running parallel to the
social systems which praise those leaders who seek to please the majority. Those kind who attempt to
make most of the people happy, most of the time.

But, no. Jesus never promised his followers
popularity. He never gave them tips how to be loved. He didn't teach them how to gather around and
take a vote on what should be believed, or what the moral code should be.
Rather he laid down the principles ... and then laid down his life.
And his
Apostles did the same.
And, since the cardinals in Rome want to remain faithful
to the Gospel, you can be sure they'll be seeking out that man who can best uphold the Gospel, and
who will best be prepared to lay down his life doing it.
They won't seek a
leader who will fear the people or seek to make the greatest majority of them happy ... here
below.
They'll look rather for a man with his heart set already on
heaven.
