Vanilla Ice-Cream

Sure it isn't chocolate brown ice cream with sprinkles???
by Benjamin O'Loughlin, LC | Source:

Before I went to bed last night in Rome, the Buffalo Bills were winning 6-0 against the Seattle Seahawks, with 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

The Seattle fans, coach, team and cheerleaders were frustrated. The way it should be.

But imagine this: the Bills score yet again (I'm a hopeless Bills fan - pray for me) and the Seattle coach celebratesThat would be weird. That would be wrong. A coach cheering on the other team?

But that's what San Diego University faculty are doing right now.

In a motion that passed 99-16, they declared university president Mary Lyons "ethically bankrupt." Her error? Barring dissident theologian Tina Beattie from giving a course at the Catholic university.

Beattie justifies her unorthodox stance by appealing to the freedom of a fully-formed conscience. However, while she may consider her conscience fully-formed, it is obviously not a fully-formed Catholic conscience. Beattie clearly opposes Church teachings on a number of issues such as contraception, early-term abortion, same-sex “marriage” and women’s ordination. As much as Beattie may believe that what she's offering is Catholic, it's not.

That's why Lyons is right. You can't coach Catholics, and then cheer on the other team. You can't advertise Catholic food, and then serve something else. That's unjust to the students you serve.

And belief doesn't change that. Beattie can believe as strongly as she wants that she's serving vanilla ice cream. But if it's chocolate brown with sprinkles, something is wrong. That goes for theology, football, and life.
