Saint Romanus, Martyr (entered heaven this day in 258)

Dear Rummy,

Your last note set off warning lights galore.  Why are you despondent?  Why so sad?  Moods come and go, but if underneath your agitated emotional surface you can find no spiritual comfort in the Lord of hosts, something is wrong.  Christ’s love never fails; his love for you never fails.  He never stops thinking about you.  That simple truth can fill the heart with encouragement and strength even in the darkest moments.  It is the secret of the saints to be joyful in the midst of trials; through their tears shines a love unquenched – just ask today’s saint.

Romanus was a soldier involved in the wave of persecution that included Saint Lawrence’s martyrdom.  As a matter of fact, it was Saint Lawrence’s joy and confidence in the midst of humiliation and imprisonment that caught Romanus’s attention.  The soldier’s curiosity led him to question the saint, who gladly explained the faith, and was soon baptizing Romanus right there in the prison cell.  Romanus’s conversion was discovered; he was tried and condemned; and they executed him the day before they executed Saint Lawrence. 

The same invincible confidence that steadied Saint Lawrence and won over Saint Romanus was poured into your heart when you were confirmed.  Why not take a look around the depths of your soul to try and locate it?  A good place to start could be a few minutes of prayer with Christ in the Eucharist.
