US Bishops Say Proposed Housing Rules Threaten Religious Charities

WASHINGTON D.C.—U.S. bishops object to regulations that may be adopted by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The new housing regulations would prohibit federal programs from discriminating on the basis of “gender identity” and “sexual orientation,” forcing religious charities to violate their own beliefs.

Adding gender-identity and sexual orientation categories to a list of groups that are protected against discrimination, pose a challenge to religious charities when making decisions about shared housing.

“Faith-based and other organizations should retain the freedom they have always had to make housing placements in a manner consistent with their religious beliefs, including when it concerns a cohabiting couple, be it an unmarried heterosexual couple or a homosexual couple,” said the bishops' general counsel Anthony Picarello.

QUITO—Catholics in Ecuador are calling on President Rafael Correa to reverse a so-called family planning campaign that would provide the population with free condoms and contraceptive pills.
