I'm 17 years old and close
with many priests (my
uncle is a Priest). I had
a facebook myself, and as
I began pursuing Religious
Life, I realized what a
hindrance Facebook was
becoming to the intimacy
with God I was looking
for. Jesus' love is
simple, but not easy. He
was Himself radical, (the
whole Crucifixion thing?)
and calls us to be. Some
Priests do without
computers completely. Not
that you can't be holy
with a computer, but I
would think we'd take
every chance we have to
keep a physical poverty,
to let go of what is
unnecessary, so as to help
encourage the detachment
we're called to from
earthly things. Is
Facebook ABSOLUTELY
NECESSARY? Or have we had
many holy Priests,
Religious, and Saints who
did very well without it?
Personally, I felt the
Lord calling me to give up
this 'secular' network.
Now, certainly not
everyone on Facebook will
be speaking of the things
of God, just as a
missionary will be faced
with someone who won't
speak of God, but the
problem, I found, was ME.
I was tempted. While I
loved to mention God
whenever I could, I wasn't
getting on Facebook solely
to talk about God, and
frankly, God didn't like
that. If he calls someone
so intimately and
exclusively to Himself,
and one says YES to that
call, then that's that.
Love God in every little
way you can, and I think
that may mean giving up
every little thing not
encouraging a love for
God. Furthermore, I
believe it'd be putting
one in a situation of
temptation, which is
technically sinful in
itself, but also just
plain dangerous. Now, on
another note, specifically
with priests, whom I love
and wish to pray for with
all my heart, I think
Priests are called to be
different. In the world,
but not of the world.
These days, yes, the
people want to feel like
they can "relate" to the
Priest. But as was said,
Priests are not just
ordinary guys. They're not
called to be! If it was a
Catholic network,
different story. But
Facebook is secular, and
choosing to open an
account is choosing to
allow yourself to see and
read things a Priest would
not want to see and hear.
Sure, he can know in his
heart he doesn't believe
these things, but if he is
called to be a child of
God, that means keeping
innocent your senses. I
always say, just because
I've heard every curse
word in the book doesn't
mean I'm going to go see a
movie with curse words
because I've already heard
them. No, you guard your
heart and your senses,
because they make up your
body and your thoughts,
and these individuals make
up the Body of Christ.
Does Facebook make the
Body of Christ stronger? I
guess I'm wondering what
would happen if every
Priest had a Facebook.
What would happen if no
priests had Facebook?
