Gay Life: Tolerate or Celebrate?

Why the Catholic Church does not celebrate Homosexuality
by Thomas A. Flynn, LC | Source: Catholic.net

Recent protests by homosexual advocates during Pope Benedict’s latest visit to Barcelona were just another sign of the gay crusade underway around the globe. Similar manifestations were seen in London back in September, in America back in 2008, and to be quite honest, anywhere else the Holy Father has wished to travel. They find it easy to strike the Pope, knowing quite well that the Pope will not strike back. In their anger they have accused Pope Benedict and the Catholic Church as being a bigot and intolerant to their personal life-style. But it is they who play the bigot, and the Church continues to tolerate them.

Toleration always implies an evil. We do not tolerate presents on our birthday or a party held in our honor. What we do tolerate are friends not bringing presents and not being invited to the party all together. The Catholic Church tolerates homosexual behavior as much as it tolerates other evil acts. It puts up with them out of respect for the person all the while proclaiming the moral evil involved.

Pro-gay advocates are not at arms with the Church because it will not tolerate, but because it will not celebrate. They want the Church to march in their gay parades, to witness their gay marriages, and put a large red O.K. on their gay lifestyles. All of this is done to naturalize the unnatural.

A quick glimpse at nature will suffice to explain the obvious. We never hear of a lioness mating with a lioness or a mother bear seeking out another mother. Two male dogs living in the same dog house will never share a moment of intimacy. Sure there have been cases of animals mating with the same sex or even a frog that changes its gender, but we call these “cases” because they are “exceptions”. The same ends of a magnet will never come together; just as the same ends of a battery are never made to touch. Nature decreed that it takes a male and female of any species to reproduce. Even the American Psychological Association (APA) dropped their claim to a hypothetical “gay gene” when scientists found out there was nothing scientific about it.

But there are those “cases” of people who feel inclined to their own sex. The Church has always made a distinction between someone with homosexual inclinations (itself not a sin) and homosexual lifestyles where promiscuous sex is implied. The person is always respected and in many cases the Church has gone out of its way to help someone with an unnatural attraction to the same sex. Be they homosexual or heterosexual, the Church teaches that everyone should live abstinence according to their vocation in life. Married men and women are called to abstain from sex with other people. Single men and women are called to abstain from sex all together. Now, why shouldn’t the Church ask the same from homosexuals? Many homosexuals do in fact live abstinence and are an example for many.

Any talk of err in homosexuality is destined to ruffle a few feathers. Many people ask the question “why can’t they be happy like everyone else?” Of course they can be happy and to my knowledge the Church has never denied this fact. It only points out that to be happy is not equivalent to following your passions wherever they lead you. Nearly every child enjoys chocolate, but what mother allows her little pumpkin to eat as much as he wants and to his heart’s content? There are limits to such pleasures and the difference is as contrasting as fit and fat.

Tolerate we must, but the Church will not celebrate.

The Church must say no to gay “marriage” which manipulates the very meaning of marriage and opens the door to the legalization of polygamy and any other sexual combinations; it must abstain from gay couples adopting children so that they are not reduced to mere toys in a social experiment; it must speak out against homosexual intercourse as a sacrilege of pro-creation; it must uphold the moral truths that sustain the dignity of every man and form the mold of a just society.

I wish with all my heart that people writing about the evil of homosexuality would realize how utterly dismissive they sound when they reference the universal call to chastity, for singles, for married people and for those with homosexual tendencies. Heterosexual married couples can experience that amazing self-giving, singles can pray for it and anticipate it. Homosexual desires can never, ever be willfully engaged in thought or acted upon. So the struggle of the man or woman with same-sex desires is a million times harder than the happily married Catholic man, who so jauntily cites the universal call to chastity. I find the insensitivity appalling.

I recently saw some postings on Facebook by some Gay Rights groups claiming to be Christian, condoning homosexual practices and saying they weren’t sinful. I know this is a very difficult, sensitive and controversial subject. But I think it’s very important to know and understand the Catholic Church’s position on this subject, and the reason for that position.

Homosexuality is a perversion just like the Bible says. It must be avoided and absolutely not accepted if that society wished to remain viable. I am reminded of the ancient stone markers in Japan. They clearly warned the Japans not to build below the markers themselves. Those who did lost their lives. Those who heeded the wisdom of the ancients remain untouched. The Revealed Wisdom of Our Father is in the Bible. We must not violate them. In these affluent times, it is easy to break rules and not suffer any consequences. But, like dry tinder which builds on the forest floor because good intention people put out the small fires, a wildfire is in our future. The consequences of accepting this perversion will explode across our lands with devastating consequences. The mere toleration of homosexuality has vexed us with AIDS. The acceptance of homosexuality will catastrophic consequences.

we call these cases because they are exceptions **** You obviously have ZERO knowledge about our closest relatives from the world of nature.Bonobo, dolphins etc etc.. What is totally unnatural is to believe in an invisible psychotic friend

From friends I used to have who were gay or lesbian, they said it wasn't enough to be "tolerated," everyone has to support it and celebrate it. Basically gay fascism... if you didn't support and celebrate it you should be considered an uneducated moron and not be given any employment or even "tolerated." They didn't realise they are their own worst enemy. I supported and accepted them until I realised just how controlling and evil they were. They want freedom to be what they want to be and want to take it away from everyone else.

This is an interesting article and in one sense Thomas is right. Tolerance is not a celebration. However, Thomas does qualify his argument by saying Homosexuality is not natural. I disagree with this statement; it is natural, in humans homosexuality has been documented since the time of the Pharaohs in Egypt and has been continually documented throughout history. Homosexuality and Bi-sexuality has been documented throughout the animal kingdom (particularly in birds and mammals and including the mighty lion). For the Bonobo, a species of ape, homosexual activity accounts for roughly 60% of all sexual activity. Therefore saying it is unnatural is not true. It may be that homosexuality in humans and the wider natural world is not the norm however it is natural. The second point that I find is not founded is that homosexuality implies promiscuity. It is possibly true that a result of recent historical gay liberation there was a surge of homosexual promiscuity. This is more to do with the liberation than the nature of homosexuality itself. It can also be argued that the prohibition of homosexual marriage within catholic the faith adds to the propensity of homosexuals engaging in sex outside marriage. Remember also that these rules were written by a completely different culture than that of the western culture we live in today. The Ten Commandments imply that slavery is morally just: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” Exodus 20:2–17 Im sure everybody can see the cultural difference between then and now when put in this context.

I am not a Catholic, but I agree completely with this. Wow, I really don't know much about Catholicism. Just what I have heard. Wow, I stand with this completely. In Christ, Ron Yoakum

I just do not understand how people can be so naive about what is right. Letters from the twelve Apostles, Jesus speaking, as well as the prophets of old. Homosexuality is condemned and God alone will judge(BIBLE). Never condemn the sinner but the sin! May God come soon! Bless all the saints and guide us all who believe by his Holy Spirit!

The Catholic Church is guided by the Holy Spirit, if you believe it then you have to live by it, if you really believe in GOD then don't question the Church, just follow the laws of the Church. You people dont really belive that the Catholic Church is the one and only Church founded by our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST, I see that you only see the human part of the Church, If you dont agree with something so what! carry your cross and follow JESUS.
