Saint Charles Lwanga, memorial
Mark 12: 13-17
Some Pharisees and Herodians were sent to Jesus to ensnare him in his speech. They came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone's opinion. You do not regard a person's status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?" Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius to look at." They brought one to him and he said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?" They replied to him, "Caesar's." So Jesus said to them, "Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." They were utterly amazed at him.
Introductory Prayer: Lord, I love you. I am grateful for your presence, and I will make the effort to be open and hear what you tell me about how I should treat others. I believe that you will enlighten me and move me to treat others better today.
Petition: Lord, you had to deal with all types of people, those who favored and those who opposed your mission. You treated all with respect and kindness and tried to illuminate their lives. May I continue to do the same, especially with my loved ones.
1. The Family Coin The Romans conquered, governed and enforced the peace. It had a cost: Caesar’s tax kept his forces moving. But as a result, many benefited. Today, we need to build the bridges and roads necessary for family life and friendships to succeed. Every day we have to pay with coins stamped in our family’s image. Love builds a special home or a workplace atmosphere where respect and understanding abide. Where do I find service lacking?
2. A Sword Is Needed Many are out to defeat the family. So what is our battle plan? We must defend the line this summer and protect family values. We must conquer new areas such as attractive meal-times, enjoyable family activities and times set aside for the service of others. The brave will be rewarded with the Medal for Outstanding Service to Family Life. Love is its own reward.
3. Emperor Honored? Our homes are equipped to meet our basic material needs: a kitchen with refrigerator and oven, bathrooms with hot water, a living room with TV and bedrooms. Are they also equipped for Christ, our King ? Our family needs a quiet place where we listen and converse with him. Do we have one? Do we use it? Have we enthroned an image of the Sacred Heart in our home to frequently remind us of Jesus’ untiring love for us?
Dialogue with Christ: Lord, I thank you for all families and especially for my family. You always encouraged good families. May I use my talents and time to do the same, so that you are appreciated, loved and honored.
Resolution: I will do something special for my family or for another family.
