As I write this debut article for Catholic.net’s Life & Family / Marriage Channel, I am enormously excited, humbled and awed that my lovely wife Kathleen and I have been chosen, though thoroughly unworthy, to enter your lives as Catholic.net visitors, and for you to enter ours. With the paramount help of the Holy Spirit, Kathleen and I, through our regular contribution, will offer insights and formation dealing with marriage and family issues, such as openness to life, natural family planning, chastity, the Eucharistic and sacramental life, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, prayer, trusting in God, the cross, dealing with crisis, living by a true hierarchy of values, formation of children, raising a holy family together centered on Christ, miscarriage, building and restoring trust in the relationship, service to the Church and others, the importance of keeping a sense of humor, as well as an almost endless myriad of the dynamics of marriage and family.
Who are we? We are Catholic reverts, Regnum Christi members, speakers, spiritual guides and co-authors of BETTER BY THE DOZEN, PLUS TWO, subtitled Anecdotes and a Philosophy of Life from a Family of Sixteen. We have been married for twenty-four years, and live in the Chicago metropolitan area. We are the parents of nineteen children, fourteen living on earth, ages twenty-two to two, and five living in heaven.
I personally am a cradle Catholic who became thoroughly duped by the culture, formerly a contracepting hedonist, a materialist, a confused prideful moral relativist, a major sinner who was given the unmerited, amazing gift of a major conversion at age thirty-three, seventeen years ago. My credentials are Christ, and His call, nothing else, only Christ and His Holy Spirit, and our Father of Mercies.
Kathleen and I are blessed to be engaged in the ministry of faith formation and evangelization. I own a modest business. Kathleen is an attorney by profession and holds and undergraduate degree in education. She put her career aside when our first child was born for the sublime calling and blessing of raising our family.
We place the fruits of our work first and foremost into the trustworthy hands of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was through her intercession, through no merit of our own, that the Littleton family received the sublime gift of a deep and active faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord. We also place this column under the patronage of St. Joseph, St. Paul, St. Pio, St. Rafael Guizar y Valencia, St. Therese of the Child Jesus, St. Faustina, St. Rita, Servant of God Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, Servant of God Maura Degollado Guizar, and all the holy angels and saints. Let’s live and grow in our Eucharistic lives and prayer. It is there in, with, and through Jesus Christ that we will find the answer to all of our problems, questions, needs, and destiny. We need to fuel a Eucharistic revolution! It is there that we will find everything, our ALL.
As our relationship develops through the means of this column, please count on our prayers and the prayers of the entire Littleton family for each of you. You are always included in each of our Masses, Eucharistic visits, rosaries, prayers, sacrifices and crosses. Though most of us have never met, God knows who you are, and will honor our meager intercession for you. Will you pray for us too?
Let’s forge ahead together with great confidence as courageous risk-takers for Christ, and do our indispensable part to re-form the culture suffering from so much confusion and disorder. We have the light and truth of Christ. Let’s support one another as we engage in our God ordained mission. We cannot be reticent or afraid. Why should we? Christ is with us! “For I, Yahweh, your God, I am holding you by the right hand; I tell you, ‘do not be afraid, I will help you.’” (Isaiah 41:13)
The world is dying for Christ! Let’s resolve together to continue to form ourselves and to do something effective for Christ and souls. Let’s not fall into the demonic trap that we should not bother because we are weak and still struggling to crowd out our own sins and faults with God’s grace. Christ chooses the weak. (Cf: 1 Corinthians 1:28) He chooses the worst so that his power will be made manifest. His grace is sufficient for us. His power is made perfect in weakness. (Cf: 2 Corinthians 12:9) This is how He works. None of us could be worthy of the privilege of being sent by Christ. We need only say, “Here I am. Send me!” (Cf: Isaiah 6:9)
