Saint Philip Neri. Memorial
Mark 10: 17-27
As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.’" He replied and said to him, "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth." Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the Kingdom of God!" The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, "Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God."
Introductory Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to be able to let go of everything in order to follow you in my daily life. If I am attached to anything in this world, may I know how to break away from it so that I focus only on giving you praise.
Petition: Grant me a purified heart that seeks always to put you, Lord, in the first place in my life.
1. Don’t Be Good, Be Holy One of the greatest challenges we have in life is to make the step from being good to being holy. There are many good people in the world, but there are very few holy people or saints. The world needs the example of holy people; they are the ones who shed light on this frequently sad and frustrated world.
2. Give It All Away Why is it that we get so attached to the material realities of this world? They keep us from taking that definitive step in searching for holiness in our lives. Christ tells us today to give it all away. Detach your heart from the things of this world. Attach your heart to his heart; this will fill you with happiness.
3. Follow Christ The story of rich young man is one of the saddest stories in all of the Gospel accounts. The young man could have been a great apostle like St. Peter or any of the rest, but because of his calculating spirit, he got lost in the byways of history. We shouldn’t make this mistake. We should accept the invitation that Christ directs to each one of us and truly follow him. The path is not easy. He demands that we live for him wholeheartedly; but we will be filled with peace and joy.
Conversation with Christ: Lord Jesus, I know you are looking into my eyes at this moment and telling me to follow you. Grant me the strength, Lord, to seek true holiness in my life. Grant that I never be satisfied with just being good.
Resolution: I will say a prayer for the conversion of sinners.
