Like most parents, I was sure that each of our children was the cutest baby in history. But I admit that when our son started on solid foods, there were moments when I had my doubts.
It wasn't just the usual "food everywhere but in his mouth" stuff. It was that he was a "rut" eater. I mean, he would go for days refusing to eat anything but his favorite taste of the moment.
The mashed pea rut lasted a couple weeks. He refused everything except the green glop. We nicknamed him Peabody. It worried my wife and me, so we called the doctor. He told us kids do this sort of thing, don't worry, take two aspirin and call in the morning.
The aspirin didn't help, but the kid eventually branched out to things of other colors and textures. Sometimes, he would actually eat things that were genuinely good for him. He grew like a weed and learned to hit a baseball just like a healthy American boy.
Our baby now is a 19-year-old college student, generally strong and healthy. Unfortunately, he has again strayed into an eating run. These times it isn't a green vegetable. We're hoping the human body can survive on pizza and hot dogs.
