LOGAN, IA (FEBRUARY 8, 2008) - For decades the statue of the Scourged Christ has drawn Christian faithful to gaze upon its realistic representation of the passion of Jesus. The image dramatically illustrates the Lord’s very human suffering in the context of His eternal sacrifice. The Statue has been a subject of much controversy ever since it was first displayed to the public back in 1936. To some observers, it is somewhat unsettling, but to most, it is a fascinating and deeply moving work of sacred art, an awesome sight to behold.

Despite conflicting opinions, one this is obvious: This compelling image has mass appeal. Due to its powerful representation of the Lord’s scourged body, the statue is only appropriately displayed during certain times each year, most especially during the holy season of Lent – a solemn time for reflection and repentance; a time for all Christians to ponder Christ’s suffering and death on the Cross.

The statue may be viewed at the Museum of Religious Arts, 2697 Niagara Trail, Logan, IA. Museum hours are from 9-5 Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sundays and closed on Mondays and on major holidays. Entrance fee is $7 for adults, $4 for children age’s five to 12 and free for four and under. Please call 712-644-3888 with any questions.
