Lenten Journey with MaryMeditating on Our Lady’s pregnancy.

Mary's nine monthsGreat Lent is a pregnancy
(mourning menses gone),
body spilling nausea
with awe for a growing
Unknown.
As body balance changes,
fasting as only survival ...
budding each day, each week;
while longing for new life's
Arrival.
Fast beats pulse beneath her heart,
probing womb's alienation,
Mary's patient waiting
until His surge of life nudges
Reconciliation.
"Reject not your mother's teaching," (Prov 1:9)
hers a mysterious journey:
gestation, month by month, until
the glory of a Child ... arrives for Pascha's
Glory.
Reflection on the icon:
Here we have the Virgin Mary in the Coptic tradition from Egypt. The style of the iconography is simple in line and form. However, the elements are the same as other early images of Virgin Mary found around the Mediterranean. Her Son holds the scroll indicating He is the "Word," and his fingers in the traditional form to tell us that He has two fingers held together to represent His humanity and His divinity, and three fingers held together to indicate the Trinity.
