Lenten Journey with Mary

Mary's thirst.

Mary's Thirst

Thirsting for my God,
like a deer searching
in forest hoping
for thaw (Psalm 42:1).

Searching in my soul,
a question shiv’ring
throughout self, hoping
Love’s real. (Psalm 42:2)

Crying, his mother,
as mothers sobbing,
she knows He’s dying
… she kneels.

Aching in her bones,
she knew our parting,
shattered world groaning
… she prayed.

We thirst too, pleading
for we are needing;
fasting -- love healing
our flaw.

Parched for His Being,
through darkness walking …
she holds us balking;
in her gaze.

Icon flowering,
candlelight says:
her heart thirsts for us,
all of our days.
Reflection on the image:
Hidden behind the magnificent silver covering, we see the faces of Virgin Mary and her Son, who gaze at us, waiting for our coming to the call of God. Mary in her solemn and sober gaze looks right at us and knows our plight. She holds her Son who looks to the sacrifice He will make. We, too, in walking with Him must be ready for sacrifice for giving of ourselves totally for others. Caught in the gaze of His holy mother, we pray she will accompany us on our Lenten path to the Son's sacrifice, and come with us on our life's journey to be with us in our time of sorrow and pain.
