The Home Shrine

Four simple steps to make the most of your home shrine.

Most Catholics have an image of the Blessed Mother. Many have their home shrines, which often grows from year to year. A home shrine is a physical setting that can really help to build the prayer life of family and friends. Here are simple steps to make the most of your home shrine:

1. The Divine Strategy
As original Christianity came forth in the families, thus also the renewal of the world must come from the homes. In this small and intimate circle, we are called to renew our faith and to educate ourselves to become new creations for a better world. Other families around our renewed family can also be influenced by the experience of a shrine centered home. Our homes will function like magnets: they attract others and the circle will become wider and wider. The renewal of our family especially that realized by means of a serious striving for the home shrine seems to be an excellent way to build a new world.

2. Apostolic Service.
If your relatives and friends come to your home and they approach the home shrine with faith, then it becomes a place of grace for them. For that reason, you must open your shrine and offer it to brothers and sisters in need. If a beggar knocked on our door and asking for something to eat, you would not reject him. You must do the same when someone asks for spiritual help. To put this person in contact with God through your home shrine is a great way to help him to experience the divine graces, right there at your home.

3. The Rosary Campaign
Organize or join a parish Rosary campaign. The Holy Rosary is prayed weekly in a different home. This is an awesome opportunity for you to invite all your friends to gather around your home shrine to pray every time you are hosting. Through Our Lady’s intercession, Our Lord will respond to your prayers as he did in the wedding of Cana. You can also organize novenas for special intentions, or just make it into a weekly event at your home. Put the word out, so that your neighbors, friends, and relatives can join.

4. Instrument of Grace
Our first apostolate should be our own family. But we should not be selfish. Our home shrines can become inspiration for multiplying God’s grace among those around us. Make your home shrine into instrument of grace so that all the families in your neighborhood or your city can become alike the Nazareth families. What a great apostolic work it is to invite brothers and sisters to pray and offer them an inviting setting to do so! Realize that your home shrines are not meant to be a simple traditional décor piece, but it is supposed to become a blessing to your community, and source of grace for all of those who visit your home. So be creative to put your home shrine to good use.

The Home Shrine Challenge
If you still don’t have a home shrine, make it a family project and enjoy quality time with your loved ones creating your home shrine. Make your shrine the center of your home. The biggest challenge is to make the most of it by sharing your home shrine with other people. What is the point of having a beautiful Bible on display, candles, images of favorite saints, prayer books, if you are not using these physical aids to grow closer to Our Lord, and to help other to do the same? The biggest challenge is to make sure your home shrine is a setting for daily feverous prayer.
