Special Edition: “Why not priest?”
A great new video.

Father and son sat together reading the newspaper with great interest. The boy was seated happily on his father´s lap, who talked to him about the various articles that they came across.
He told his son to turn the page, and there appeared a large title written in all caps: “COMPLETE LIST OF CAREERS ACCORDING TO THE MOST RECENT SURVEY”. The little boy´s eyes lit up and he began to read out loud: engineer, firefighter, dentist, politician, professional football player…
His finger brushed one by one over the various occupations printed on the thin, gray paper. He reached the end of the list. His wide-open eyes glanced up to meet his father´s. An expression of disappointment could be seen on his face. Once again, he read over the long list of jobs: architect, farmer, policeman, lawyer, acrobat, tennis player… at each name he read faster and faster.
As he drew his finger towards the top of the list for the third time, his father´s hand reached out and grasped his. He spoke in a soft voice: “Don´t bother any more, son; priest isn´t on the list.”
Without a doubt, in today´s world the priesthood doesn´t seem to be very popular. This little anecdote I heard a few years ago just goes to show it. We might be surprised to find that “priest isn´t on the list”, but often we ourselves are the ones who don´t want it to be there. Nevertheless, how badly we need holy priests in our world!
That´s why I think that the initiative taken up by a group of Legionary of Christ seminarians is fantastic. In a very original video clip on the web page www.whynotpriest.org (also available in YouTube and GodTube), they tell what moved them to decide to follow Christ in the priesthood.
From Paris to Seoul, passing through Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, Mexico, and New York, they transmit a message of hope and enthusiasm to all young people, echoing Pope Benedict XVI´s invitation: “Do not be afraid to say yes to the Lord’s summons when he invites you to walk in his footsteps! Respond generously to the Lord! Only he can fulfill the deepest aspirations of your heart.” (Homily on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Lourdes, 14 September 2008)
Having experienced the greatness of following God´s call, not only do they challenge others to do the same, but they also offer concrete help to young people in discerning their vocation. The web page includes the possibility to send in any questions, doubts, or interests, which will be answered by a priest.
The young men promoting this initiative are convinced: “Today is a wonderful time to be a priest!”…even if it doesn´t appear on the survey list.
