Stop Promoting Gay Marriage

Newsweek Magazine has lost its grip on reality.

Warning: the following column includes blunt language and an unfiltered proclamation of the truth.

I hereby proclaim the December 15 cover of Newsweek Magazine to be the most inane, insulting and just plain stupid cover (and story) of the year. I’m not sure the editors of the publication will be upset by my statement; they may just titter with glee at how they have stimulated controversy and encouraged discussion.

Frankly, they should be ashamed. In case you were lucky enough not to read that issue – and I certainly would encourage you to skip it – the cover story is “The Religious Case for Gay Marriage.”

In a long and tortured article that violates every precept of logical argument, writer Lisa Miller scours the Bible for examples that would seem to counter the traditional view of marriage as between a man and woman. Some of the supposed proof points?

• David wrote a song praising his friend Jonathan.
• Mary and Joseph had an “unconventional” marriage.
• Jesus was single.
• Lots of famous men in the Old Testament had more than one wife.

I’m not sure how any of that justifies gay marriage. But it would seem that in making the “religious” case for gay marriage, the writer simply stumbled around the Bible for what she interpreted to be exceptions to the nuclear family made up of mother, father and children.

In fact, that is the ideal composition of the family. And from a Catholic perspective, the prime example is Mary, Joseph and Jesus – in partnership with Our Father in Heaven and the Holy Spirit.

Years ago, I was a subscriber to Newsweek. After I graduated from college and learned to think, I realized the publication had drifted a bit to the left of Pravda and sought better sources of news. Today, I’m not sure that Newsweek is much worse that most popular publications. But if you peruse recent issues you will find an obvious preoccupation with the issue of gay marriage. Perhaps the battle over Prop 8 has sent the promoters of gayness over the edge.

Perhaps it is fear of reality sinking in. You see, gay marriage isn’t about civil rights, human rights or fairness, despite the case many in the media are trying to make. It is about trying to make acceptable behavior that is, quite simply, contrary to nature and God’s plan.

Newsweek is expressing a gay point of view. Otherwise, we’ll soon be seeing another cover story: “The Religious Case for Traditional Marriage.”

Yeah, Jim. I would buy that one edition. However it seems like "Newsweek", "Times" and the like are refusing to take Christian dollars these days. I guess our money is no good there, just like their content is no good in our homes.
