Tuesday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time
Luke 12: 35-38
Jesus said to his disciples: "Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants."
Introductory Prayer: Lord, may I continually and patiently wait upon you, knowing that you have promised to return. I believe, Lord, that you will come again. I am keeping watch for you.
Petition: Lord, help me to stay with you and pray, waiting for you.
Here, in the midst of busy worldly activity, can we truly hear him? How much clutter is in our lives? Are we guarding ourselves from the hustle and bustle of this world so that can we hear him knocking? He is knocking; we must answer. In order for us to truly be prepared, we must listen in order to know what he wants of us. Are we listening?
2. Open Your Eyes
Can we see him? We are told he is there; is he? Our eyes must be free from the images of this world; we must keep watch, for he is coming. Jesus is our help and our shield, but if we hide, we cannot see him. How blessed are we to have the opportunity to see him. “Our God is in the heavens, he does whatever he pleases. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands, they have mouths but do not speak, eyes but do not see” (Psalm 115:3-5). Are your eyes open to the One above?
3. Open Your Heart
Our hearts were made for the steadfast love that God has for us. His faithfulness is abundant. The Lord knows we are yearning, calling out to him and seeking him, oftentimes in the wrong places. When our hearts are clean and open, he answers our pleas and sets us free. When the Lord is at our side, our hearts do not tremble, they do not fear. Is your heart open to the love that Christ has for you?
Conversation with Christ: Lord, here I am. I am standing here waiting. Without you I am nothing. You are my strength; your right hand guides me. When I fall, you pick me up; when I am hurt, you heal me; when I am tired, you make me strong; when I am fearful, you give me courage. Help me, Lord, in all that I do. Help me to listen to you, to hear your voice. Help me to open my eyes so that I may see you and your will for me. Help me to open my heart so that I may accept your will.
Resolution: Lord, I resolve to take time today to listen; to sit in silence several times during the day so that I may listen to you speak to me. Help me to close my eyes to this world, so that I may truly see you. I will open my heart to your will. Show me your way, O Lord.
